9 Tips for Becoming A Freelance Writer

This is a guest post by Ali Abbas of The Writing Blog.

If you have the ambition, flair and ability to work hard, sooner or later you will become a successful freelance writer.

For those of you who are ready to hit the ground running, these guidelines are nothing but the hurdles that other writers faced when they started their career, and if you get acquainted with them quickly, your journey will become considerably quick and hassle-free.

However, if you feel you are not getting the results you want even after trying hard, one of these guidelines may salvage you.

Here are 9 tips to help you become a successful freelancer:

1. Start Realistically
The initial phase is the most hard-hitting one, so don’t set a goal that is impossible to achieve, as this will result in nothing but frustration.

2. Manage Your Price
When you start, you may have to work for peanuts, but this is fine because with the passage of time, you will get better paying jobs. When you have a recurrent stream of work, fix a decent price and stick to it.

3. Miss a Date to Meet a Deadline
I agree that this can be nasty, but when a client pays you, he wants the results on time. However, sometimes it can be impossible. If this is the case, contact your client and inform him as soon as you realize that you cannot deliver on time.

Most clients will be more cooperative if you take them into confidence in advance rather than telling them that everything is OK and then requesting for an extension at the very last minute.

4. Choose Your Projects Wisely
There are certain projects which need particular know-hows and not everyone can complete them. Never choose a project which is out of your domain, no matter how lucrative it might be – I suffered a lot because of this mistake personally, but only once.

5. Never Surprise Your Client
Your client only wants what he wants. If you think that you can add something more valuable or give the write up a completely different dimension, make sure that you get your client’s say-so beforehand. Surprises mostly bring negative results.

6. Give Every Client the VIP Treatment
Now this is an important, but usually overlooked tip. Treat your clients in nice and courteous manner. Sometimes, clients will happily accept your ‘average work’ only because of your good conduct. However, this does not mean that you can win their hearts simply with pleasant words while giving them trash writing.

Treat all clients equally, no matter they are overnice or inimical.

7. Enjoy Your Work
Take pleasure in your work; this is the only way to produce quality content. If you are getting tired or bored, take a break and go out for a walk.

Don’t write when you are not in the mood. Writing is an art and to produce a masterpiece, your mind as well as body should be relaxed.

8. Create a Personal Website
Create a website to show the world what you are all about. Add a blog to your website, its benefits will be amazing. There will be times when you don’t have any writing jobs and staying idle can corrode your abilities. The blog will help you keep writing and growing.

9. Frequently Read Other Writers
This is the only way to correct your mistakes and polish your skills effectively. Read blogs and writings by past masters and compare your work with theirs. Earmark a specific time for this purpose and make it a habit.

Now go and start writing!
