What You Focus On Expands, So Focus On What You Actually Want

For a long time in my life, I focused on the bad stuff. The negative, annoying, bad things that were happening all around me. The news. Society. Other people. My bad habits. My insecurities. My “not good enough” bullshit.

I focused on that stuff, all day long most days. And hating my day job caused me to complain with people about how bad things are.

During my final job working for someone else I spent upwards of eight hours a day complaining with my coworkers about how bad things were there. Eight hours!!

Talk about focusing on what you DON’T want.

‘Cause here’s the thing… whatever you choose to focus on, expands. It grows. And you start to see more and more evidence of it.

This is true whether what you’re focusing on is “good” or “bad.”

And that’s what I finally realized when I was still working a soulsucking day job: I get to choose. I get to decide what I focus on and what I take my attention away from.

I’m not gonna lie, I definitely still complained with my coworkers. (It was kinda hard not to, things were really shitty at that company.) But when I got home, I left the complaining at the door.

I shut off my work phone and put it away and didn’t look at it again until I was sitting at my desk the next morning. Whatever happened, happened. I didn’t care anymore. I was DONE working for someone else and DONE working at a place I didn’t believe in.

I made the choice to block it all out, like I didn’t even work there. And instead I focused as much of my attention and energy as possible on what I actually wanted: to work for myself.

I got home at night and I blogged and I wrote and I worked on building my writing business. I got really good at acting as if I wasn’t working for someone else anymore (even though at the time I still was).

I had a quit date, it was written down and I declared at the beginning of 2012 that this was the year I’d finally leave my job and work for myself.

I believed it. With every ounce of my being. Even though I had ZERO clue how I’d make it happen. I just trusted and I kept acting as if.

When I got to the office every day, I told myself I was at my side gig and I was consulting and wasn’t really an employee. I pretended I had a contract and that it was over on my quit date.

I believed it.

And I FOCUSED on it.

So when I ended up quitting and leaving three months before the quit date I set, I wasn’t at all surprised. Because what you focus on expands.

And I’d been focused on working for myself and being able to do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. That was my dream.

But I was also focused on complaining with my coworkers when I was at the office. So that continued to expand too, and before I knew it, the entire place had become one big fucking shit show.

When I put in my two weeks notice I didn’t even end up finishing the entire thing. I’d had enough and I didn’t want to have ANY of my focus on that stuff anymore. So I went to the HR lady and told her I was done.

And I walked away–OK, I admit, I danced away like a fool in my car–and started a brand new life as an entrepreneur.

Whatever you want, you can do it too. You can use your focus to create whatever YOU dream of doing and having and being. ANYTHING.

It’s all up to you. And simply by placing your focus on exactly what you WANT in your writing life and beyond, and REMOVING your focus from all of the things you DON’T want, you will totally change your life. Why?

Because life grows where focus goes.

How To Combine Energetic Mindset Actions With Practical Physical Actions To Create Manifestation Magic

A little more than a year ago I discovered something: you can make pretty much anything you want happen if you combine practical, physical action with doing energetic mindset actions.

The energetic mindset actions aren’t enough on their own… and neither are the practical physical actions. Sure, the practical physical actions will help you make some progress and will get you somewhere, but it will feel hard and you’ll struggle a whole lot.

But all of that can totally be avoided when you combine the two types of actions. Because in combining the actions, you summon the magic and the power of universal energy to support you.

If you just do the energetic mindset actions, you’ll be connected with universal energy, but you won’t be doing anything in your actual reality to make something happen. That’s the equivalent of meditating on your couch and thinking all of your dreams will come true.

On the opposite side, when you only do the practical physical actions in your reality and you think that’s enough, you’ll often find you have to work really, really hard. And you still won’t achieve what you want. Because practical physical actions alone will eventually burn you out. Usually before you’ve reached your goal.

The problem is, most people have been programmed to believe that you have to manipulate and make changes in your physical reality if you want anything to change.

And that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth is while you do have to make changes in your physical reality in some way, you don’t have to only make changes that way. And, really, when you do the inner work, your outer reality can totally change all on its own.

Because what you see in your current reality is simply a reflection of your internal world and what you’ve been thinking and believing up to this point.

So if you change your thoughts and change your beliefs, your reality will change with it. It has to, because that’s how it works.

Your thoughts and beliefs create your reality. So what you see all around you right now is simply a byproduct of your past thoughts and beliefs.

Your reality is effect NOT cause.

Most people believe the opposite–that what they see in their reality is causing them to have certain thoughts or reactions or beliefs. Nope. Your thoughts and beliefs are creating the reality you see around you.

Beliefs and thoughts come first, reality comes after.

This is the distinction that finally got me working more on my inner game and mindset than spending time trying to fix or adjust things in my actual life. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve made a lot of practical physical changes in my life over the years as well, but the biggest changes that I’ve made came from inside.

And those have not only been the best changes, but they’re also the ones that stuck and actually shifted things in my life.

So let’s break this down again… first come your beliefs. Your beliefs are already programmed in you and have been for most of your life.

From these beliefs that are programmed into your subconscious mind come your thoughts. And then your thoughts dictate the decisions you make and the actions you take.

What DOESN’T happen–although this is what most people think happens–is you see something in your current reality that then triggers a thoughts which then triggers a decision or action. Nope.

Because your beliefs and thoughts are first creating what you see in your reality. So it’s not possible for it to work the other way around.

You’re only seeing what you’re seeing or experiencing what you’re experiencing in your current reality because you first hold a specific belief about that thing you’re looking at or experiencing, and then that belief triggers a thought, which then triggers your perception of what you’re seeing or experiencing.

At first this may send your mind into a tailspin, but trust me when I say that after you fully accept how things really work, your entire life will change.

Because then you can consciously on purpose choose your beliefs and thoughts which will then effect the reality you’re seeing around you.

For example–I decided a while back that I was tired of having to drive around a parking lot over and over again until I found a spot. But I had a belief that you had to drive around and look for a spot and that front-row parking spots are hard to come by. Pretty ridiculous beliefs to have, but that’s what I was working with.

So I created a new belief: I always get front-row parking spots.

It took some time for me to reprogram this into my subconscious before it started to manifest in my life, but once it did, that’s what I nine times out of ten experience: I get front-row parking spots.

Even on the busiest days of the week at the busiest places. Somehow I have perfectly divine timing and I show up when the front-row spot is available or I roll up and someone is just pulling out of a front-row spot so I can pull in.

How did I create this belief that is now true in my reality? I simply decided that I was going to. And then I combined practical physical actions with energetic mindset actions until it became true.

First I just repeated it to myself over and over again whenever I was going somewhere. I’d just say, “I always get front-row parking.” (Energetic mindset action)

Then I started to write it in my daily journaling and intention setting, “I always get front-row parking.” (Energetic mindset action)

Then during my visualization practice I’d see myself getting front-row parking wherever I went. (Energetic mindset action

Then when I was driving somewhere, I’d imagine myself finding a front-row spot. (Practical physical action + energetic mindset action)

And when I got where I was going and I found a front-row spot, I’d actually park there. (Practical physical action)

And then after I parked and got out of the car, I’d say, “thank you” out loud, to let the Universe know that I was grateful that the front-row parking space was there for me. (Practical physical action + energetic mindset action)

Anytime I went somewhere and I didn’t find a front-row spot, I wouldn’t waste any time wallowing in it or saying it wasn’t working or anything like that. I would just park wherever I could find a spot (practical physical action) and then I’d pretend it was a front-row spot and I’d say, “I always get front-row parking, thank you!” (energetic mindset action)

By doing all of that, I eventually reprogrammed my subconscious to believe that I always get front-row parking. So now, whenever I go places, I always get front-row parking.

And on the very rare occasion when that doesn’t happen, I don’t make a big deal of it, I just park and continue to reinforce my belief that I always get front-row parking. Simple.

You can use this same process of combining practical physical actions with energetic mindset actions to create ANYTHING you want to see in your reality. Anything!

Yes, it will take some time and you will have to work on it, but eventually it will become normal for you and once something is normal for you, that’s what will always show up. Over and over again.

Give it a try. You may just be surprised by the results.

Manifestation Marketing: What It Is, How To Use It

Something that has become so powerful for me in my writing life is combining practical, physical actions, with energetic, spiritual-type actions. I’d even go so far as to say it’s the thing that has changed the game for me.

It’s the thing that’s helped me to become a multi-book, multi-category best selling author on Amazon and sell more than a thousand books in a month and more than 500 books in one day. It’s the thing that’s made my writing career TAKE OFF.

But I didn’t have a name for it. I didn’t know what to call it, the combination of practical and energetic.

Until today. Today, I have a name for it.

It came to me this morning, like a bolt of lightning, when I was chatting with a member of my Bestselling Author Mastermind. He was asking about getting support on writing and selling more books. And I was thinking about how best I could help him with this.

And then it hit me… the name for what I do: Manifestation Marketing. The combination of taking practical actions along with energetic actions is how you use the power of manifestation to make your marketing efforts a success.

Of course, this also comes down to mindset. Mindset is everything. And mindset is a huge part of manifestation.

So mindset + manifestation marketing = insanely awesome blow-your-mind totally amazing results.

BOOM!

And just like that, a whole new shift in perspective and focus in my writing business.

How To Do Manifestation Marketing

If you’re still reading this, that means you’re someone who believes in the law of attraction (though I’d argue not believing in it doesn’t change the fact that it exists. But I digress…). And the law of attraction is an extremely powerful universal law. Like gravity and momentum.

With your belief in this law, you can use energetic actions to make your practical physical actions–things like writing your book, revising your book, marketing your book–work even better and feel a whole lot easier.

Something I’ve realized as I’ve gone through my journey this year so far is that everything has felt so fucking easy. I mean, yes, I’ve been working my ass off.

But it hasn’t felt like I’ve been. I’ve felt in flow and like things are just happening with ease.

This, of course, is all because of my mindset and what I’m actively choosing to focus on. But the point is, I always thought that achieving the things I’ve achieved this year would be so hard. Yet when I started combining the practical and energetic actions, it’s made everything a breeze.

Again, let me point out, that I am doing a lot of work. I’m taking massive action, on the daily, writing my ass off, creating my ass off, doing more mindset work than ever before… and it’s all paying off. I’ve truly taken control of my reality and began creating exactly what I want for my writing life.

And you can too.

Here’s an example of how you combine practical and energetic actions. In June, when I found out I was less than 50 books away from having sold 1,000 books for the month, I sprung into action and I:

  • Sent an email to my community, letting them know what was going on and asking them to buy one of my books
  • Got on social media and spread the word about my mission to hit 1,000 book sales by 11:59 p.m. that day
  • Made social media posts throughout the night, updating people on my numbers and asking them to buy one of my books
  • Told everyone I knew (or everyone I’m friends with on Facebook anyhow) to check out my books and buy one if they were interested
  • Shot quick videos for Instagram and Facebook, telling people what was going on and asking them to help me out by checking out my books and buying one if something looked good to them

BUT, I didn’t just do the practical actions. I also:

  • Decided it was a done deal
  • Set my mind to it
  • Visualized it happening
  • Wrote my reality–in my journal I wrote out, specifically, what I wanted to see happen
  • Committed to keep going no matter what my current reality looked like
  • Trusted that by doing whatever practical and energetic actions I could think of, the Universe would show up and deliver the result I was asking for

Those are the energetic actions that, when combined with the practical ones, make magic happen. 

Manifestation Marketing, in a nutshell. The art of combining practical physical actions with energetic actions to create book marketing magic.
