There. I said it. The one thing people rarely say in the online entrepreneur/coaching space.
Most of the time, you think you’re doing something because of your vision or wanting to help more people, but when you dig deep to the core of it, the only thing you’re actually doing is chasing money.
Hiring that expensive coach because she claims to help people make money. Signing up for yet another course or program when you haven’t even gone through the ones you’ve already paid for. Constantly looking for the magical silver bullet solution that will finally open the money floodgates for you.
I hate to be the one to burst your bubble—actually, I really don’t; I love being that woman—but it ain’t gonna happen.
There is no magic bullet.
There is no always-works-every-time strategy.
There is no one thing that will change everything or make the money start pouring in.
Except for this: finally admitting to yourself that you’re chasing money, and then stopping and instead connecting with your actual purpose on this planet.
I speak from major experience on this one, as I’ve gone more than six figures into debt chasing money.
Hiring all the coaches (some of which I haven’t been able to finish paying yet). Signing up for all of the programs (some of which I’m still paying for even though they never helped me make a dime). Investing in all the random business ventures I believed would make me more money (but never did).
Even going to college and getting a Bachelor’s degree was me chasing money. I never wanted to be a journalist or a PR person, I just thought having that degree and those skills would help me make more money as a writer.
Not saying some of those things that I’ve invested in haven’t helped me in some ways, of course some of it has.
But the majority of it was pointless. I can’t even count how many coaches I’ve worked with or programs I’ve invested in that literally just taught me the same shit I already knew.
I’m not one to regret things. I fully believe that everything I’ve done, learned, invested in, paid for, not paid for, am still paying for, is all helping me to become to best version of myself.
But regardless, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have done or invested in most of those things.
Because I was just chasing money. Almost every time I hired a coach or signed up for a program, it was because I bought into the belief that doing so would equate to me making more money.
Chasing money does not work.
The truth is, I never had a vision for my online business or a real mission to change the world through being a coach. That wasn’t ever a thing for me.
I would sometimes force a vision out or force myself to sit down and create a mission I could believe in. And it was all great stuff that would inspire anyone.
But it wasn’t real or authentic for me. And that’s why it never stuck.
I don’t have a vision for being an online entrepreneur (or an offline one). I don’t have a mission to change lives through being a coach.
I never have and I never will.
What I have always had, however, is a vision to be a storyteller whose books and screenplays get made into movies on the big screen and streaming all over the world.
That has been my vision since I was 11 years old (before streaming services were even a thing—that got added to the vision later on).
Since age 11, I have had a vision of myself standing inside a movie theater, in front of a movie poster for a movie that was made from my book/my story, of me holding said book in my hand, pointing to the movie poster and smiling.
I’ve had a vision of renting out a whole theater for my family and friends to come and watch the first showing of my story being made into a movie.
I’ve had a vision of gathering my family and friends in my home theatre to watch with me when the movie made from my story was on DVD (or now on Netflix or wherever).
I’ve seen it in my head and in my heart millions of times over the years.
THAT is the only vision I’ve ever had. It’s the only mission I’ve ever had.
Everything else was just me chasing money.
As a creative, it’s so easy to get caught up in the bullshit that you see spewed online every day about coaching people and helping people and needing to invest in a coach or hire a mentor to be able to make bank. But all that shit does is leave you hung out to dry.
Yeah, you might make some money (I’ve made plenty of it over the years). Yeah, you might help some people (I’ve helped thousands of people over the years).
But you’ll never feel fully fulfilled.
You’ll never go to bed at night fully feeling like you lived the life you know you’re meant for.
Because the only thing that can create that feeling for you is giving into the actual vision, the actual mission.
The one you’ve seen inside yourself for so long now.
The creative one. The one that has felt selfish, and self-indulgent, and absolutely ridiculous.
I mean, who the hell actually believes they’re gonna be one of the writers who makes it big? Who the hell actually thinks they’re going to live to see their fictional story turned into a movie? Who the hell is crazy AF enough to buy into a vision and a mission so out there and nonsensical?
And the answer is: you are.
You, the one who always saw this vision. You, who has always had a mission like that. You, who was chosen and sent here and given the creative gifts and talents and know-how to actually make it happen.
Y. O. U.
BUT—and this is a really important but—that will never happen so long as you keep chasing the money.
Chase your purpose. Chase your actual vision.
And the money will chase you.
