Dear Adam,
You don’t know me, but you’ve been part of my life since I was a kid. First on SNL and then in the various movies you’ve made that I still watch, quote and refer to on a regular basis.
I saw your new Netflix special last night, and it was some of the best standup I’ve seen in years. You are still to this day one of the only comics who makes me laugh so hard I cry (and that’s not easy to do).
“Adam Sandler 100% Fresh” is some of your best work. Ever.
As a fellow multi-passionate writer and creative, I’ve always been inspired by your ability to be unapologetically who you are. You’ve done the thing that most multi-passionate people think is impossible: you’ve figured out how to be all of you AND get paid for it.
You play guitar, write and sing funny songs, tell jokes, do skits, make movies, and you’ve got a cult following of people who love you and your comedy. I am definitely part of that cult–have been since the early 90s and always will be.
You’re a light. You’re a comedic rockstar. And you’re funny as fuck.
As someone who has always been told that I’m “too much,” it was refreshing to watch your Netflix special and see how powerful it actually is to own all of you and to put it out there and share it with the world.
You’ve reminded me that being multi-passionate is a strength. It’s a gift. It’s something to be celebrated.
That’s how 100% Fresh felt to me: it was like a celebration of your journey to becoming one of the best comedians of all time… regardless of what any rotting tomatoes might say (critics fucking hate themselves, by the way, that’s why they’re critics–so they can point out other people’s “flaws” or “shortcomings” in an attempt to distract from their own).
But unlike you, critics aren’t living their purpose. They’re too afraid, and so they invest all their energy into trying to destroy others who actually are.
Your purpose is to entertain and make people laugh. Mission accomplished. And your legacy will live on.
I wanted to send this letter directly to you, but I don’t have your email address like the guy from your kid’s basketball game does, so I thought I’d share it publicly, in hopes that you’ll see it and be reminded of how amazing you are.
So, THANK YOU, Adam.
