I procrastinate because I think I’m not good enough.
There’s a little voice in my head that says, “This sucks!”
As soon as I finish my writing, doubts creep in.
My writing is mediocre.
I can’t ever seem to finish anything I write.
I have no idea how to get started writing.
I spend too much time on Facebook or doing research on how to become a better writer, and not enough time writing.
I’m too tired to do any writing today.
No one will want to read what I write, so why bother?
You may have a variety of ways to describe what stops you from writing. But in the end it all boils down to three things:
- Fear
- Distractions
- Disorganization
Those three things stop most writers from doing the writing (or finishing the writing). And it’s a shame.
Because the world needs your words. Your target audience wants to read your words.
Are you really going to deny us your words?
“Before I started working with Jen, I was battling two major demons: fear and procrastination. Like a lot of writers, I can be quite adept at finding ways to put off sitting down at the page. Unfortunately, I was getting better and better at avoidance tactics. But the more I dodged my writing, the more I became paralyzed and afraid I just couldn’t do it anymore. That’s when the Universe did me a solid and allowed me to stumble across Jen’s site, where I met a person I can honestly say has changed my life in ways I never expected.
There are a lot of self-styled “coaches” out there, but I can tell you with certainty that Jen has a true gift. Before I worked with her, I had been absolutely terrified to tackle a novel for literally two decades. I read every book and did every exercise, meditation and ritual on the planet to get me past my fear to no avail. But Jen’s incredible knack for mixing kick-in-the-ass calls to action with compassion got me past my blocks, and I finally finished my novel. I’ve also learned how to stick to a writing schedule for the first time in my life!
Aside from being an exceptional teacher, Jen is one of the kindest, funniest and most good-hearted people you could ever meet. So, if you get the chance to work with her, seize it. You’ll be glad you did.”–Mary DeRosa Hughes
Butt-In-Chair Sessions
You know the phrase, “I wrote the book on that?” Well, I actually did write the book on that.
I’m the author of Butt-In-Chair: A No-Excuses Guide for Writers. I’ve been writing professionally for almost 15 years and my blog was recently named one of the Top 10 Blogs for Writers for 2015.
But that wasn’t always the case for me.
Back when I first started getting serious about writing, I couldn’t be consistent to save my life. I was a couple years out of college and no closer to my goal of being an author.
I knew I was meant to write books, but I had so many other things getting in the way (aka: fear, distractions and disorganization).
Then in 2008, I’d finally had enough. I made it my mission to become a published author no matter what it took.
Two years later, it happened.
My journey wasn’t smooth-sailing by any means. It was full of ups and downs, twists and turns, surprises and disappointments, excuses, really bad excuses and even worse excuses. But somehow I figured it all out.
I know what it takes to move past the things that stop you from writing.
Together we will figure out where you want to go with your writing, uncover what’s stopping you, and create a plan to attack it head-on.
You will:
- Kick self-doubt to the curb
- Bust through fears
- Reduce distractions
- Create the organization and structure you need to support your writing
You’ll walk away feeling confident in your writing and yourself as a writer.
What You Get
In these sessions we will dig deep and talk about your writing. What we won’t talk about are the specifics of your story or the writing projects you’re working on (that’s a different type of session).

“Jennifer helped me get unstuck so I could finally start writing the screenplay I’d been dreaming of writing for a long time. Now I have a story plan and am already writing the first draft. Best of all, she gave me tools to help me deal with the things that were keeping me stuck: fear, distractions and lack of energy. I feel confident I will not only finish my screenplay, but will keep this creativity up for the long haul.”–Jane Long

“Oh my god, this chick knows her stuff! I was feverishly taking notes because she has such great ideas and specific tips for my unique issues as a full-time working mom trying to use writing to build my biz. I can’t wait to implement what she’s told me, but I totally need to just sit down somewhere and let it all digest. Wow. Thank you so much!“–Elizabeth McCarty
