You have got to stop buying into that struggling creative, tortured artist bullshit. Because that’s what it is–BULLSHIT.
The only creatives who struggle or who feel “tortured” are the ones who haven’t set themselves up for success as a creative.
Setting yourself up for success will look diferent for every artist, but as a professional creative myself, here are my thoughts on what it requires:
- A daily habit of working on your art (even for 15 minutes, which should be the minimum daily commitment)
- A daily commitment to clearing out the mind clutter (these days I do this by meditating, but my go-to used to be freestyle stream-of-consciousness journaling)
- Doing the due diligence to learn the skills you need to pull off your art (learning story structure, if you want to write novels, or learning color theory as a painter before going off and doing your own thing, etc. As they say, before you break the rules, you should know what they are).
- A running list of ideas (if you always have a running list, you can’t lean on the excuse that you don’t know what to write/paint/draw/sing about, etc.)
- A willingness to do the inner work of reprogramming any old limiting beliefs about your art, your worth, being a creative, making money from it, etc.
- No longer accepting any excuses from yourself about why you can’t do your art (or why it’s too hard, you’re too tortured, you’re stuck, have writer’s block, or whatver other excuses you’re using)
No, it’s not easy being a creative. A lot of work, time, effort, energy, and soul goes into making a piece of art.
But it doesn’t have to be a struggle and it doesn’t have to feel torturous.
So don’t buy into that bullshit anymore.
Set yourself up for success. Commit to doing what it takes.
And you’ll find yourself flowing along with your creative projects in no time.🔥
